Sutton & Epsom Olympic Weightlifting club was victorious at the highly prestigious 11th International Women’s Grand Prix held this past weekend in Speyer, Germany. Indeed not only did the club secure first place in the team competition but the 2nd string team also took second place. Incredibly both teams defeated the Irish and Welsh national teams. Stand out individual performances were delivered by reigning British champion, Evelyn Stevenson, who took the bronze medal in the 75kg class, Maria Wrosek’s silver medal in the 58kg class and Eliza Wcislak’s victory in the 75+kg class. Wcislak, who is only 17 and recently took the silver medal in the European Youth Championships, also received the award for overall third best lifter in the whole competition. Other team members were Samantha Balchin, Heike Niemand, Julija Lalina, Mathilde Orlandoni, Sonia Fierro, Martyna Rusak & Vicki Kerr. The event was the first venture onto the competitive stage for both Lalina and Niemand; both performed admirably, especially given the magnitude of the event

Club founder and head coach, Philip Nourse said, “This was an incredible performance by an amazing group of girls that make me so proud time after time. For a local club side that receives no funding to secure 1st and 2nd place in a competition of this magnitude, defeating national teams in the process, is an amazing achievement.”

The club will now prepare for two more London Grand Prix events with Evelyn Stevenson and Alvin Ossai favourite to win the female and male series titles respectively.
